This summer Kevin submitted his feature length screenplay, “Bananafish Sandwich,” to the screenwriting competition sponsored by the New Hampshire Film Festival. The script was read by the screening committee where it made it to the final 10. From there, it went to the finalist committee, led by the coordinator of the NHFF screenwriting competition, Dana Biscotti. It then made it to the final three selections where it was then judged by the writer/director, Buzz McLaughlin (author of “The Playwright’s Process”).
Dana let Kevin know that he had won the competition in mid-September and then invited him to participate on the screenwriting panel during the festival. A scene from the script will also be published in the inaugural issue of the on-line magazine, The Green Chair Reader. Kevin was able to fly to New Hampshire for the festival through a Harvard-Westlake betterment grant. He saw numerous films – features, shorts and documentaries – during the five-day festival. A link to the panel discussion can be found here.
“Bananafish Sandwich” is one of four feature-length scripts that Kevin has written. He has also written numerous short scripts, one novel and recently completed his first non-fiction book on photography.
And what is “Bananafish Sandwich” about? Here is the logline from the festival brochure:
To get into college it used to be just good grades, two teacher recs, a kick-ass personal essay and, when all else fails, a donated building. Nick Ellis, a high school senior at Hanover High, New Hampshire, thinks a little philanthropic burglary might improve his chances – with college and maybe even the trustee’s daughter.
Kevin is presently looking for representation here in Los Angeles and is working on several new screenplays. When called up on the stage during the awards ceremony, Kevin thanked the festival organizers, complemented them on what a beautiful town Portsmouth was and then pointed to the “Granny” (the 25lb. block of granite that’s their version of the Oscar) for the best feature film and said, “When I visit again, that’s the rock I want.”
