Endowment Growth
Objective: To build the Harvard-Westlake endowment into a major source of support for the school and its mission, so it can support talented teachers, gifted students, and dedicated staff in one of the country’s premier educational institutions.
Impact: Endowed funds are used for financial assistance, distinguished teaching chairs, exploration of emerging academic areas or other special uses.
- They help strengthen the ability to provide financial assistance that can attract families from many diverse backgrounds.
- They help retain faculty who model the inquisitiveness of mind and restlessness of spirit for our students.
- They help ensure the timelessness and timeliness of current and future academic departments and programs.
Harvard-Westlake’s endowment program supports the school’s passion for excellence. Donors give money to the school with the provision that the principal remains intact. Because endowment gifts provide capital appreciation and ongoing income for the school, the critical variable in funding is the size of the endowment.
Harvard-Westlake’s endowment program is about enabling great opportunities – for faculty and students. The school’s priorities are dynamic and diverse, and the school works with donors to match their philanthropic interests to a wide range of needs.
- Support for students
- Support for faculty
- Support for academic, athletic and co-curricular programs
- Support for facilities
Facts about Harvard-Westlake’s Endowment
Simply put, the size of the Harvard-Westlake endowment is not commensurate with the school’s other accomplishments. To continue to meet our academic mission, to recruit and retain exceptional faculty, and to make a Harvard-Westlake education accessible to all families, our endowment needs to grow substantially.
- As of June 30, 2009, Harvard-Westlake’s endowment is $33 million
- While Harvard-Westlake ranks among the best schools in the nation, when it comes to endowment, the school is not as “well off” as many think.

Objective: To provide new and increased endowment support for students of exceptional academic and personal promise, preserve the school’s mission and vision of education, and reflect the ethnic and social composition of our community.
Impact: A recurrent theme at Harvard-Westlake is the obligation to educate students both in their minds and in their hearts. Facts are important; but feelings are vital; knowledge is essential but wisdom is better. If Harvard-Westlake succeeds, students will have been prepared for the demands of both the workplace and the society they will someday shape. Extending this possibility to families in financial need is truly The Opportunity of a Lifetime.
Financial Assistance Facts (as of 2009-10):
- 265 students (15%) receive financial assistance
- $6.7 million of financial assistance is distributed (10% of the school’s operating budget)
- Income from scholar endowed funds provide $500,000 of the financial assistance budget
- The remainder, over $6 million, is provided by current operating revenues (tuition and annual giving)
- The school’s aid package includes tuition remission and assistance for nearly all school-related needs
Giving Opportunities
Named Scholar Endowed Fund $ 500,000
These endowed funds provide the equivalent of a full tuition for one student. Many donors choose to honor or memorialize a family member, friend or faculty/staff member through the naming of these endowed funds.
“Face of Los Angeles” Student Fund $ 200,000
These endowed funds provide partial tuition assistance for one student.
Named Student Assistance Fund $ 100,000
These endowed funds recognize a financial aid recipient fully benefits from a Harvard-Westlake education only if that student can enroll in courses regardless of lab fees and expensive texts, or join an athletic team or instrumental music program notwithstanding the cost of equipment or a musical instrument. These funds cover the vast majority of school expenses for all students receiving financial assistance. Students fully participate in the life of the school without being stigmatized or segregated because they are receiving financial aid and draw upon all the opportunities the school has to offer.
