Beginning Monday, May 14, DWP will be working on the section of Coldwater directly in front of the Harvard-Westlake main driveway. If you are traveling southbound on Coldwater, you will not be able to make a left into the driveway. Continue on to the next left, which is Hacienda Drive, and make a left into that driveway and another left into the school. There will be security personnel there to assist you. If you are traveling northbound on Coldwater, you will be able to make a right into the main driveway. You will be able to exit the driveway as usual.
On Tuesday, May 15, only, there will be one exit lane out of the main entrance onto Coldwater. We will have multiple cement trucks coming to the pool site to pour concrete that day. This will add to the congestion on Coldwater AND on the US campus.
LADWP crews will intermittently reduce Coldwater Canyon Avenue to one lane of traffic in an area just south of Ventura Boulevard, beginning on May 16 and lasting until approximately March 2013. During the hours of 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and occasionally on Saturday, flaggers will be on site to coordinate traffic along Coldwater Canyon Avenue, between Halkirk Avenue and Avenida del Sol Drive, allowing one direction of traffic to pass at a time. Each day, after work is completed, LADWP crews will restore Coldwater Canyon Avenue to two lanes of traffic with a single lane in each direction.

An LADWP Trunk Line Construction Crew is currently working on Coldwater Canyon Avenue, between Dickens Street and Van Noord Avenue. An additional work zone will be established on Wednesday, May 16, between Van Noord Avenue and Hacienda Drive, south of the existing work zone. Part of this work zone is in front of both entrances to Harvard-Westlake. Construction in this location is expected to be completed in October 2012.
Starting on May 15, 2012 through March 2013, heavy flagging will occur on Coldwater Canyon Avenue, between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday, and occasionally on Saturday. Motorists will encounter delays when traveling on Coldwater Canyon Avenue. Please allow extra time for traveling to and from school.
According to LADWP, the project is 14.3% complete and is anticipated to be completed in September 2015.
Construction hours are 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. For a map of the area, click here.

Coldwater Canyon to be Reduced to One Lane; Additional Delays Expected
We have been notified by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) that heavy construction on Coldwater Canyon Avenue will begin Monday, December 19 through Friday, December 30, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. In order for this construction to take place, Coldwater Canyon will be reduced to one lane in both directions.
The construction will involve a heavy flagging operation, stopping traffic in one direction to allow traffic from the other direction to pass, which may cause delays. The LADWP is advising motorists to use alternate routes during this time. Since the entrances to Harvard-Westlake Upper School can only be accessed via Coldwater Canyon Avenue, please be aware of this possible delay.
It is likely that this construction will not be completed by December 30 and will carry over into January when we return from winter break. Please allow extra time for traveling to and from school during and after winter break. Updates will be posted here as soon as we receive them.

We recently received the following update from LADWP:
An LADWP Trunk Line Construction Crew is working on Coldwater Canyon Avenue, between Dickens Street and Van Noord Avenue. LADWP crew completed installing the 60-inch pipe crossing the Harvard Westlake High School north driveway. Once the pipe in front of the north driveway is backfilled and paved, LADWP crew will concentrate effort to construct the pipeline at the north end of the work zone near Dickens Street. This work zone is expected to be completed in February 2012. Once completed, LADWP crews will move south to the next work zone between Van Noord Avenue and Hacienda Drive.

Parking at Harvard-Westlake Homecoming: Saturday, October 1
Even though we are dealing with DWP work on Coldwater Canyon this year, we are working to provide as much parking as we can.
When you arrive on campus, please pay attention to the Harvard-Westlake security personnel, who will be directing traffic. If you park in the nearby neighborhoods, there will be CJL shuttles driving around the area to help get you to campus. If you require special parking due to limited mobility, please drive onto campus and tell the nearest security staff member.

The following message was excerpted from an email that was sent by Head of Harvard-Westlake Jeanne Huybrechts this morning.
Right now I want to give early notification – especially to parents of upper school students – of parking and traffic challenges we anticipate this year on our Coldwater Canyon campus, challenges brought on at least partly because of the wonderful improvements we are making on that campus and for our students.
During the next year we will be renovating Mudd Library, building the set of classrooms that will become the Kutler Center for Interdisciplinary Studies and Independent Research, and replacing our swimming pool with a 50-meter state-of-the-art swim stadium. Construction began this summer; as you enter campus you will immediately see signs of great progress. You’ll also see a few blocked parking places and some narrowed pathways. Upper school traffic flow will be further impeded by the City’s major construction project in front of campus – a five-foot diameter pipeline being installed under Coldwater directly adjacent to campus. Where there were once four lanes on Coldwater, now there are two.
Here are some parking/driving guidelines and suggestions for anyone commuting to the upper school campus this year. We will, of course, continue to apprise you of developments throughout the year.
- Parking is strictly prohibited on Coldwater Canyon Ave. and in neighborhoods adjacent to campus. Students who do not have an assigned parking space on campus should not drive to school.
- On most of our upper school bus routes, there are still seats available on buses. For more information, contact Patti Snodgrass at psnodgrass@hw.com.
- Whenever practicable, carpool with other HW families.
- If possible, students should arrive to school early. Buildings are open and some faculty are on campus as early at 7:00 a.m.
- Hoping to keep on-campus traffic flowing smoothly and to get students to classes and to their after-school appointments on time, we have developed a new set of drop-off and pick-up procedures. They are described below and accompanied by a map. There is much to remember here, so know that during the first few weeks of school, school administrators and security personnel will help guide traffic at both campus entrances in the morning and afternoon.
Our temporary inconvenience will be rewarded with significant campus improvements including a new academic program, new classrooms, a beautiful library, a spectacular aquatics facility – and a 21st Century water pipe under Coldwater Canyon. We have much to be grateful for.

Morning Arrival Student Drop-Off and Student Drivers

Parents traveling northbound from Mulholland Drive will drop off students either at the School’s north entrance or by entering the main entrance (at the traffic signal) and then looping around Hamilton Gym and dropping off along the sidewalk adjacent to the senior parking lot.
Parents traveling southbound from Ventura Blvd. will enter the main entrance (at the traffic signal) and then loop around Hamilton Gym and drop off students at the sidewalk adjacent to the senior parking lot.
Senior Class students who have an assigned parking space will enter the main entrance, loop around Hamilton Gym and park in their assigned spaces. Those who are assigned to spaces not in the senior lot or in front of Taper Gym should park in their space as they get to it.
Junior Class students who are assigned to Hamilton Gym spaces or St. Michael’s parking will turn onto Hacienda Drive, just south of the school’s main entrance and then turn left or right into their assigned parking area.
All students who are assigned to park on the Upper School campus will be required to properly display their parking permit or risk being denied parking privileges on school property.
Afternoon Departure Student Pick-Up and Student Drivers

At the end of the school day, parents should follow the same guidelines as above regarding entering the Upper School campus for student pick-up. Campus Security and/or school staff members will be at entrances/exits to direct traffic.
To keep traffic flowing, we’re asking parents to refrain from parking in assigned parking spaces and to remain with their vehicles while waiting for their children.

The restriping of Coldwater has begun. No left turns are permitted exiting the north Harvard-Westlake driveway. No left turns are permitted at Ventura Boulevard heading north on Coldwater (at least at this time). We will continue to keep you updated!

We received the following update today from LADWP:
The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power will be constructing the City Trunk Line South Unit 5 (CTLSU5), one of six units, as part of the capital improvement program to replace the existing City Trunk Line on Coldwater Canyon Avenue between Roscoe Boulevard and the Franklin Reservoir. Construction on CTLSU5 is expected to begin on June 1, 2011 and end in late 2015.
Trunk Line Construction crews will be mobilizing into the first work zone on Coldwater Canyon Avenue between Dickens Street and Van Noord Avenue on June 1, 2011, the start of construction. Work in this work zone is scheduled to be completed at the end of December 2011. Once completed, LADWP crews will move to the next work zone between Van Noord Avenue and Hacienda Drive.

From Jeanne Huybrechts, Head of Harvard-Westlake:
Beginning today, and continuing until 2015, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power will be replacing a 100-year-old water pipe system under Coldwater Canyon.
Construction on the section of Coldwater Canyon that borders our campus will likely continue through the end of this calendar year and require closure of some lanes and special routing into our school driveways.
To keep the entire HW community apprised of project developments, including potential lane closures and modifications to student pick-up/drop-off patterns, we have created this “Construction Update” page on the School’s website; we will post all updates here as we receive them.
