Jeanne Huybrechts joined Harvard-Westlake in 1989 as a chemistry and physics teacher. Since then, she's taught math and science courses in both middle and upper school divisions, been a grade-level dean, the school's director of studies, and, for five years, Head of Middle School. She became Head of Harvard-Westlake in the fall of 2006.
Dr. Huybrechts holds a bachelor's degree in Political Science from the University of Detroit and a B.S. in Chemistry from California State University, Northridge. She completed her doctoral work in the UCLA Educational Leadership Program, focusing on curriculum design and teaching in the sciences. Her daughter Catherine graduated from Harvard-Westlake and is now a geographer and founder of a company specializing in geospatial technology services.
Richard B. Commons is in his first year as Harvard-Westlake's president and chief executive officer. Rick previously served as headmaster of Groton School in Massachusetts from 2003 until 2013. At Groton, he was widely credited with balancing long-standing traditions with vital innovations, such as increasing financial aid and strengthening athletics and arts programs.
Rick hasn't so much joined the Harvard-Westlake community as he has returned home. He worked at the school from 1991 until 1997, first in admissions and then as an assistant dean and college counselor. During his previous tenure at Harvard-Westlake, Rick coached varsity boys soccer and taught upper school English and creative writing. In addition to his myriad duties as president, Rick is maintaining his personal commitment to the classroom experience by teaching 9th grade English this year.
Raised in Philadelphia, Rick received his Bachelor of Arts with Distinction from the University of Virginia, where he was an Echols Scholar, a Master of Arts in Teaching from Stanford University, and a Master of Arts from the Bread Loaf School of English at Middlebury College.
Rick is married to Lindsay McNiel Commons '96, and they have two children, Matthew and Clara.
Harvard-Westlake School was formed from the 1989 merger of Harvard School, founded in 1900, and the Westlake School for Girls, established in 1904.
