Middle School Physical Education

The Physical Education department offers a character-shaping program that focuses on the development of a positive self-image and provides experiences that are physically, emotionally, and intellectually challenging. The Physical Education department is dedicated to providing a comprehensive program that is structured to meet the needs and interests of students. The staff provides instruction in the areas of fitness, aquatics, individual sports, and team sports. The program reflects the ever-changing stages of growth and development during the middle school years and is designed to give students lifelong benefits. All students in physical education classes participate in a non-graded physical fitness evaluation once each semester.

Physical Education 7 8007-0
Full year — Grade 7

This course introduces students to the components of the program: individual sports, team sports, fitness, and swimming. Students choose eight activities from these three areas. In all activities, the emphasis is on the development of motor skills. Badminton, gymnastics, paddle tennis, step aerobics, track and field, wrestling, and yoga are among the choices for individual sports. Team sports may include basketball, field hockey, flag football, soccer, softball, speed-away, team handball, volleyball, ultimate Frisbee, and waterpolo. Students are required to take one unit of swimming, one unit of fitness, and one unit of either gymnastics or wrestling.

Physical Education 8
8008-1 | 8008-2
Full year — Grade 8

The eighth-grade program emphasizes continued development of knowledge and skills. During the year, students choose eight activities from four different areas: aquatics, individual sports, team sports, and dance. Students are required to take one unit of aquatics.

Physical Education 9
8009-3 | 8009-4 | 8009-5
Three independent trimesters — Grade 9

Ninth-grade physical education (PE) classes are organized by trimester, rather than semester, which makes it possible for students who participate in interscholastic sports during the fall, winter, or spring seasons to enroll in a PE class when not competing on a team. Skill refinement is emphasized. Activities may include the following: aquatics, badminton, basketball, field hockey, fitness training, flag football, golf, gymnastics, paddle tennis, soccer, softball, step aerobics, team handball, track and field, ultimate Frisbee, volleyball, water polo, and yoga.

To fulfill the three-trimester requirement, students may elect one of the following programs:

  • three trimesters of PE
  • participation on two interscholastic sports teams
  • participation on one interscholastic sports team and two trimesters of PE
  • participation on one interscholastic sports team, one training class, and one trimester of PE
  • participation on one interscholastic sports team and one semester of Dance
  • two semesters of Dance

Students may not fulfill their PE requirement by concurrently enrolling in PE classes, training classes, dance classes, and/or interscholastic sports. A trimester of an athletic training class equals one trimester of PE. Students may not withdraw from dance classes mid-semester in order to join an athletic team.

DANCE

Students in eighth or ninth grade are eligible to fulfill at least some of their physical education (PE) requirement by taking dance classes. Students choosing this option will participate in a non-graded physical fitness evaluation.

Eighth-grade students may choose Dance for one semester of PE. Eighth-grade students who choose to take a semester of Dance for PE credit must take one unit of aquatics during the other semester.

Ninth-grade students may fulfill their PE requirement by taking either two semesters of Dance or by taking one semester of Dance and participating on an interscholastic sports team.

When choosing dance classes, students should use the appropriate course number to indicate whether they are taking the class for Performing Arts or Physical Education credit. Descriptions of each course are available in the Middle School Performing Arts section, Dance subsection, of this guide.
