Harvard‑Westlake Middle School considers athletics to be an important extension of the classroom. The intent of the athletic program is not only to teach skills, sportsmanship, cooperation, and leadership, but also to help build confidence, a feeling of self-worth, and the desire for self-improvement. Coaches work to develop the players’ overall physical and psychological well-being while laying a strong foundation for continued participation. The athletics program involves as many students as possible in a variety of activities, further strengthening the sense of community gained through the achievements of group efforts.
Harvard‑Westlake fields a wide array of teams. Ninth-grade students can receive one trimester of physical education (PE) credit by participating on any of the freshman, junior varsity, or varsity teams listed under Ninth-Grade Athletic Teams later in this section.
Ninth-grade students can fulfill their PE requirement by participating on two teams, taking three trimesters of PE, or by being on one team and taking two trimesters of PE. A training class is considered to be a PE class. Students may not fulfill their PE requirement by concurrently enrolling in a PE class and participating on an athletic team.
Ninth graders must use the numbers listed to indicate the sport(s) they wish to participate in during each trimester. In sports for which a freshman team is listed, few, if any, ninth-grade students should sign up for a junior varsity or varsity team. All ninth graders must get a signature authorizing their participation on any athletic team on which they plan to play. In sports for which only junior varsity and varsity teams are listed, transportation to and from the practice facility will be provided for freshman athletes on those teams. Practices for freshman, junior varsity, and varsity teams are five days per week. Saturday and vacation commitments are common.
Ninth-grade students should pick their sports carefully and, when planning to try out for an athletic team, enroll in a PE class as a backup measure.
Students may only list a junior varsity or varsity sport on their schedule with the permission of the coach.
MIDDLE
SCHOOL ATHLETICS
Most teams composed of students who are in grades 7 and 8 are members of the Junior High Delphic League. If a team requires tryouts, they are held before each season. Students are given notice through the Daily Bulletin and other means about the days and times of tryouts. Generally, practices are held three days per week from 3:15 to 5:15 p.m. Below is a list of the teams offered and their seasons.
