English 7: Goals


Reading Skills:


1. recognizing how a character's actions and responses reveal certain character traits as a way of making the first steps in inferential reading

2. recognizing the main events in a plot

3. learning how to trace the development of a character

4. reading a poem or prose passage aloud with an awareness of punctuation and mood; identifying what words and events suggest the emotion of a poem


Writing Skills:

1. using accurate descriptive details to enliven writing and to develop observational skills as a base for both imaginative and analytical writing

2. expressing an opinion about a character's traits and using accurate textual details and explanation to support that opinion

3. learning specific ways to revise a rough draft into an acceptable final draft

4. writing in complete sentences and using the appropriate end punctuation

5. using dialogue, detail, and vivid description in creative and personal writing

 

Grammar Skills:

1. identifying and naming parts of a simple sentence

2. understanding how verbs determine the basic patterns of simple sentences

3. learning how to use new understanding of the sentence to develop variety and concreteness in student's own writing
