With this course, students begin the formal study of Latin. Topics include first, second, and third declensions; uses of the nominative, genitive, dative, accusative, ablative, and vocative cases; gender; agreement of adjectives; formation of adverbs; prepositional phrases; the present tense active indicative of first, second, third, third-io, and fourth conjugations; the present tense of sum, eo, nolo, volo, and possum; relative, demonstrative, personal, and reflexive pronouns; infinitive forms and use; imperatives and negative commands; and personal parts of verbs. The skills of reading Latin out loud, analyzing sentence structure, and using Latin roots as a key to English vocabulary are stressed. Ancient Roman culture studied includes slaves, life in the country, women, education, the Aenead and food. Students also use Latin computer programs in the Technology Center.
