General Encyclopedia Article With an Author:

Info:

Author (Last name, First name). “Title of Article.” Title of Encyclopedia. Publication date.

Example:

Chase, Philander D. “Washington, George.” World Book Encyclopedia. 2002.

Special Notes:

- This article was written by Philander D. Chase; his middle initial is used as given. If the article only gives initials for the author, you must find the initials in the list of contributors (usually in the front of the encyclopedia), and then write out the author’s full name.
- Be sure to put a period at the end of the citation.
- Italicize the title of the encyclopedia, but not the period.
- If no author is given at the end or the beginning of the article, use the citation for “Article Without an Author.”
- The publication date can be found on the title page or the verso (back) of the title page. Sometimes the most recent copyright date will serve as the publication date.

 

General Encyclopedia Article Without an Author:

Info:

“Title of Article.” Title of Encyclopedia. Publication date.

Example:

“Cheddar.” Encyclopedia Americana. 2001.

Special Notes:

- There is no author for this article, so the citation begins with the title of the article and should be alphabetized by the word “Cheddar.”
- “Anonymous” should never be listed as an author for any source.

 

Specialized Encyclopedia:

Specialized encyclopedias are considered, and cited as, reference books.
