The purpose of a bibliography is to provide enough information about the sources that you used for your research in order that the reader can find these sources for further research on the topic. Certain key elements are always included in a bibliography such as: author, title, and publishing information.

Use the following checklist as a guide when creating your bibliography. Click on the links below to look at specific examples of different types of sources.

Bibliography Checklist:

  • Appropriate header and title
  • Author’s name is typed with the last name first when it begins the citation
  • Titles of the source are in italics
  • Titles of the specific "article," "song," "image," etc. must be in quotation marks
  • City of publication is followed by a colon
  • Punctuation appears inside quotation marks
  • Hanging indent
  • Alphabetize citations by the first letter in the citation (usually the author's last name) UNLESS the word is “a”, “an” or “the”. In that case, use the next word.
  • Proofread bibliography (this is different from spell checking!)
