Choosing Classes

Students meet in the gymnasium on the first day of each three to four week unit to choose a class offered that unit based on the computer-generated drawing of the first letter of their last name. Any student absent that day will be placed in an unfilled class.

Requirements for Grades 7 through 9

Grade 7

Seventh graders will rotate through a program of eight activities. Each unit of activity will last approximately four weeks and in all activities, the emphasis will be on the development of a variety of motor skills. Following are seventh grade requirements.

Swimming - Required: Swimming fundamentals and water safety are emphasized.

Gymnastics or Wrestling: One is required: Kinesthetic awareness, balance, agility, and strength are emphasized.

Additional Sports: The other choices may include the following: badminton, basketball, field hockey, flag football, paddle tennis, soccer, softball, speed away, step aerobics, team handball, track & field, volleyball, water polo, yoga and ultimate frisbee.

Grade 8

8th graders will continue to rotate through a program of eight activities. Emphasis will be on further development, proficiency, and knowledge in a variety of classes.

Dance may be substituted for one semester of credit. Students are required to take one unit of aquatics and one unit of fitness.

Individual activities may include: aquatics, badminton, fitness, gymnastics, step aerobics, track & field, wrestling and yoga.

Team activities may include: basketball, field hockey, flag football, soccer, softball, speed away, team handball, volleyball, water polo and ultimate frisbee.

Grade 9

Ninth grade physical education classes are organized by trimesters, making it possible for students who participate in interscholastic sports during the fall, winter, or spring seasons to enroll in a P.E. class when not competing on a team. Participation in a variety of activities and refinement of skills are emphasized. Activities may include aquatics, badminton, basketball, field hockey, fitness, flag football, gymnastics, paddle tennis, step aerobics, soccer, softball, team handball, track & field, ultimate frisbee, volleyball, water polo and yoga

To fulfill the three-trimester requirements, students may elect one of the following programs:

- Three trimesters of P.E.

- Participation on two interscholastic sports

- Participation on one interscholastic sports team and two trimesters of P.E.

- Two semesters of Dance

- One semester of Dance and one interscholastic sports team

Students may not fulfill their P. E. requirement by concurrently enrolling in P.E. classes, training classes, dance classes, and /or interscholastic sports. A trimester of an athletic training class equals one trimester of P.E. Students may not withdraw from dance class mid-semester to join an athletic team.
