Projects

Print 1:
The Proof Sheet

Proof sheets are "contact prints" of your developed film. Proof sheets will be made for every roll of film a student shoots throughout the course. Proof sheets are made immediately after a newly developed roll of film is dry.

Print 2:
The 5x7

Our initial lessons in photographic printing use the 5x7 paper format. These prints are mounted on gray cover stock with artist's tape. They are then placed in clear plastic sleeves.

Students generally print 1-3 frames from Roll #1 and 4-5 frames from Rolls 2-3. At least one of these prints will be exhibited in the format pictured above.

Roll 2:
Creative Exposure Workout

Explore the different picture-making effects of aperture and shutter priority film exposure. Create pictures based on deep depth-of-field, selective focus, motion blur, camera pan, and silhouettes. Use 24 exposure film length. Continue practice in 5x7 darkroom printing.

Note: Different combinations of shutter and aperture settings can achieve the same exposure value, but they make different kinds of pictures. Try them on the same subject. For instance, try shooting the same subject with both a deep depth of field and with selective focus. Try shooting a moving subject with both a quick shutter speed and a slow one. Compare the difference between each shot by closely examining your proof sheet.

Roll 3:
Styles

Required: Abstract Realism
& Creative POVs (24 frames)

Optional : Straight Photography

& Descriptive Detail
(12 additional frames)

Abstract Realism & Creative POVs:
Use dynamic composition to emphasize the visual elements
of point, line, shape, form, value, texture and space in order to create visually interesting, and emotionally evocative
images from the real world.

Frame your compositions in a manner that emphasizes the visual elements and/or that shows us your subjects in an unusual, but meaningful way.

Continue to explore a variety of camera exposure modes.

Abstract Realism & Creative POVs

Option (12 additinal frames)

Straight Photography and Descriptive Detail: Find subjects like simple objects, ordinary spaces, and calm, self-composed people.

Frame your compositions in a manner that emphasizes the essential and/or unique visual qualities of the subject's character and appearance. Look carefully. Move in close for frames which show us details that clearly belong to the whole subject, but show us something special and revealing.

Continue to explore a variety of camera exposure modes.

The Epson Ink Jet Print

After students have retouched and colored the digital version of their B/W print, students will complete their Adobe Photoshop lessons by adding a border and text to the image.
