Visual Dichotomies
( The Principle of Contrast)

From Merriam-Webster OnLine
One entry found for dichotomy

Main Entry: di·chot·o·my

Pronunciation: dI-'kä-t&-mE
Etymology: Greek dichotomia,
from dichotomos
Function: noun
Date: 1610

1 : a division or the process of dividing into two especially mutually exclusive or contradictory groups or entities

The word dichotomy properly refers to the world of concepts, ideas, and logic. In persuasion and argument, a dichotomy may be presented to "compare and contrast" two competing or conflicting points of view.

To create visual dichotomies
by using a picture is to "compare and contrast" with vision, a more immediate sense.

Visual dichotomies engage a particular Principle of Composition & Design : the Principle of Contrast.

As a visual principle, Contrast means more than optical differences in brightness, satuation, greyscale values, or hues of color.

We can also have contrasts in size, space, shape; line; and/or texture.

The scanning eye of the beholder moves from one point of focus to another, and this usually involves focusing on points of contrast, or visual dicotomy.

Visual dicotomies can be created for any of the elements or principles. The table below suggests some examples.
