Sketchbook Homework #1
10 Gesture Drawings

Amazon.com

We will make 10 gesture drawings in our sketchbook, using a Bold (Fine) Sharpie marker or any other black felt-tip marker which makes a rich, thick, black line.

Make sure your marker is not an Extra Fine Sharpie and/or is not dried out.

Make these drawings on single sides of your sketchbook (leave the back of each page blank).

To Begin: Place your sketch book in the vertical position. Number pages 1-10, centering each number
on the lower edge of the page. Write your letter-number in the lower left corner and your name in the lower right corner.

As you draw, label each drawing with a brief description or title at the top of each page.

Examples: "House Plant," "My Brother Reading," "My Dog Rover."

Do gesture drawings of these subjects:

Plants
People and/or Animals
Objects with Curves
Julie K. '05
Hannah M . '08
Gene L . '08

Assignment:

1. Do five drawings of real people or animals (not statues, toys, or stuffed animals).

2. Three drawings of plants (avoid cliche and/or mechanical hand motion).

3. Two drawings of objects that possess curves.

Rules For Gesture Drawing Assignment

1. Use a single, continuous flowing line.

(avoid fuzzy-wuzzy, wishy-washy, achey-breaky lines)

2. Observe your subject, not your drawing.

(draw by feeling, don't edit or peek)

3. Spend about 10-15 seconds per drawing.

(draw with confidence, don't rush).

4. Let your line flow across and around the form, following the awareness of your gaze.

(avoid outlines, go where your eyes go)

5. Make your drawing fill the page.

(get loose)

6. Don't forget to title your work and number your pages 1-10.

(leave the back side of the pages blank)
