The town of Leiden is known for its university, the oldest in the Netherlands. Though the town itself never contained a large Jewish community (just 350 in 1930), it is noted for the strike at the University of Leiden during World War II. Protests followed the dismissal of Jewish students and professors at the University in 1940.
