Rotterdam is Europe’s busiest port and the Netherlands’ second largest city. 10,500 Jews called Rotterdam home before the Holocaust. Of these, only 13% survived the war. The city center of Rotterdam was razed by German bombers on the fifth day of the German invasion of the Netherlands, leading to the quick Dutch capitulation. Some Jews in hiding throughout the country were told that, if questioned, they should claim to be refugees from Rotterdam. Today, only roughly 250 Jews live in Rotterdam.
