Utrecht, perhaps best known for the 1713 Treaty of Utrecht ending the War of Spanish Succession, is the Netherlands’ fourth largest city. It was home to roughly 1,200 Jews before the Holocaust, most of whom were deported. Several hundred, however, were able to go into hiding with the aid of local organizations, the most famous of which is the Utrechtse Kindercomité (Utrecht Children’s Committee). Also, Utrecht Archbishop Johannes de Jong was a leader in encouraging resistance among his Catholic followers and the general Dutch populace.
