Matters of Honor
Harvard-Westlake Math Department

The Honor Code is an integral part of our school culture, and the Math Department enthusiastically supports the efforts of the Honor Board in all such matters. As part of that effort, the Honor Board has asked teachers to separate minor from major infractions of the Honor Code. Teachers will handle minor infractions, with the support of the department. Major infractions will be sent to the Honor Board.

Major infractions are usually premeditated attempts to gain an unfair advantage on a quiz, test or semester exam, including violations of the Calculator Policy. Major violations can also occur on homework assignments, however, we do encourage students to work with others on such work. Teachers will articulate the difference between collaboration and cheating when such work is assigned in class. Students are expected to follow assignment guidelines and ask the teacher for clarification of this distinction. The English Department also has resources which can help to understand the difference between refining one's ideas through discussing them with others and plagarism.
