The design you choose for a site will depend on several factors, the most important of which is the site's purpose.

A Good Start: Surf

Observe how other designers-especially those with objectives similar to your own-solve problems, handle color and typography, and use the medium to convey their message.

Web Site Types

There are a multitude of Web site types, all driven by the site's purpose.

MIT

Comedy Central

Snickers

Land's End

Drudge Report

C|Net

salon.com

IBM

Purpose Drives Design

What's the purpose of the site; how will it be used?

Is your site meant to provide information to the general public on the hazards of pesticides, or is it strictly for entertainment?

Will you sell products through your Web site, or simply provide information about your organization without any transaction capability?

What will keep them coming back?

What elements in your intended design will promote return visits and user loyalty?

Mock ups

Many designers like to create design mock-ups in Photoshop -- sample

When applicable, try to bring your site metaphor into the mock-up use mock-ups of actual content, logo

Play around with different layouts until you think you've found the layout that best matches your plan
