Slides – of head project Materials - Bring clay to next class - clay - pick a subject for the non skull half of your head that can cause it to have profound meaning when combined with the skull half. Begin modeling head armature – Metal structure Brain – (plastic and tape sphere) with wire for brain stem Materials: Tools Clay Tape (for adhering “brain” to armature and for sealing clay to prevent drying) |

Day 12 |
Tanagram – Slides- Tools -rulers -6"X6" paper -white colored -12"X12" paper - white - colored -tape - 6"X6" sheets & ¼" or thicker -razor blades -exacto knives -glue -marker pens - 2- colors -use upright water-fed sander to smooth edges Note: for determining the patterns on the 2nd side – 1- place the 1st color sheet under the glass so you can view the pattern thru the glass. 2- Arrange the second tanagram shapes on the glass as desired 3- Put glue on those pieces 4- Place the 12x12 paper on top and they will be stuck on 5- Remove paper, let dry 6- Clean glass remove all glue as it becomes a resist 7- Trace pattern on each side of glass 8- Tape and sandblast 9- Retape and sandblast for second level before blasting |

Welding- Line, space (positive & negative) – Slides -all the elements -joining materials 1. Gluing - unlike 2. soldnering - unlike 3. brazing - unlike 4. welding- like Demo - set gauges - striker -explain - acetylene- fuel - oxygen - efficiency in burning - adjust to cone -goggles - take apart and clean - gloves - brazing with brass rods and the use of flux - 1/8" X 6" rods |

Week 13 |
Separate tools -wrasps -files -knives -loop tools -wood tools -Demonstrate use: How to clean (use wire brush) -Paper buckets for plaster mixing -cups for individual use -how to mix- plaster in water!!! -MUST wet form totally before adding layers of plaster on wrapped armature at the end of first class of adding plaster to the armature have the student let the plaster harden in the plastic cup… then… the first thing done in the next class is to “crack it out.” This shows the complete cycle of the plaster… from watery to solid. Also… at the end of this class cast ½ cups of plaster to harden for the next class so that they have a “block” to carve on and experiment with the use of wrasps. |

Depending upon how the projects with glass, plaster, clay and metal proceed dictates the rest of the course. Projects to choose from: -Plaster, positive & negative -Space water balloon sculpture -Film Saul Bass- Why man creates? - Henri Moore - slides & video - Geometric clay slab build forms or solid and hollowed out - Raku clay form- discuss properties of clay how form expresses nature and speaks of the materials, plus the reduction garbage can firing - RELIEF - make a composition by cutting into the clay build a wall around the formed clay. Cast in plaster, remove clay and clean. -Raku- assignment - list all the properties of clay: Blindfold, make a form that defines the properties of clay. Discuss communication, materials, feeling, senses, -Readymades - handouts, Herms, Cox, Fina and bring in objects that are autobiographical. Slides of Chamberland, Nevelson, Grooms, Herns, Picasso (Seat & Handlebars) Duchamp (Wheel & Toilet). Found objects could also be based around defining "anything", i.e. love, hate, death, fear, emotions, etc. -Carving in substractive- bring to class a paper carton, Fill with plaster, carve, paint |
