GENERAL CONCEPTS

A  WORKING  DEFINITION  OF  ART

A genuine art work is a successful composition

which Is a SIGNIFICANT EXPRESSION of REALITY

as INTERNALLY INTERPRETED by an individual who

presents it in an ORIGINAL, LOGICAL and

                        PERSONAL manner.

                        ISSUES

                        expressions vs. communication

                        reality… both external and internal

original… simply the old made different to radical departure

logic… recognizing the particular INNER LOGIC of a system

                        personal… experiencing the artist’s spirit

RESPONSES  TO  ART

                   SUBJECTIVE… like\ dislike. (a matter of taste).

Valid information as to your emotional

response. Has nothing to do with the

                        aesthetic or significance validity

                        of a work.

OBJECTIVE… successful\unsuccessful.Ananalytical evaluation of the aesthetic considerations, historical development and

Significance levels of a work. This may influence taste but is not the basis of it.

MODES  OF  EXPRESSION

REALISM…clearly identifiable objects. The technique emphasis

                                    Manipulation of subject may make

 it less than photographic.

ABSTRACTION…Identifiable objects are simplified and\or

distorted to such a degree as to completely take them out of the real of natural reality.

NON-BBJECTIVE…NO identifiable objects presented by the artist

AESTHETIC  CONSIDERATIONS

                        FORM

Consider HOW the image is composed.

This is concerned with the formal properties

of the work. Form analyzes the way the

element & principles are used to create

a unified whole.

                        CONTENT

Considers WHAT the idea of the work is.

Content begins with the raw objects and symbols represented

in the image.Form the way these simple content clues are

presented we then develop logical conclusions regarding the THEME or MESSAGE.

                        INTENT

Considers WHY the artist presented the

content in a particular way. This seeks to understand

the meaning, internal emotion, purpose, mystery

or transcendent essence of the work.

LEVELS  OF  SIGNIFICANCE

                        HISTORICAL

The work is strong subject \content

                                                            representation of the persons, bellefs,

events or styles of the period in which

                                                            it was created.

TRANS – HISTORICAL

                                                The aesthetic qualities of the

                                                            relationships in the elements\principles

viewpoint on subject matter and \ or

sophistication of style are so sensitive

that the work transcends its historical

origins and evokes a positive response

to the excellence of its form.

            META – HISTORICAL

                                                          The presentation of subject both

in its aesthetic form and expression

of content is so intense that the

                                                                        work stimulates a timeless response

about the nature of the being human.

HISTORICAL  DEVELOPMENT

EXPERIMENTATION

An idea, theme or form becomes the

                                    primary visual expression of a

                                    culture’s self image. These early

                                    expressions are often simple,

severe and symbolic. They are the

                                    essence of the idea.

            ELABORATION

                                      Interest develops in detail

                                                and precision. The visual imagery

reaches a high point of clarity,

completeness, correctness and

comprehensiveness in the integration

of all significant elements.

            EMBELLISHMENT

                                                The imagery becomes exaggerated. It

is “played” with – distorted, decorated,

dynamic and dramatic in both its

                                                visual excitement and emotional intensity.
