“I was assigned to Mr. Mastin at an Admission Days mini-class. We started talking about journalism. I mentioned that while I had no experience in journalism, my parents had been journalists and I was really interested. He offered to let me skip the intro classes and join The Spectrum immediately.
At the end of my 8th grade year, I became editor-in-chief. It was his last year advising, so it was special. Mr. Mastin’s enthusiasm — and the confidence I gained interacting with administrators — definitely opened doors for me. I became editor-in-chief of The Chronicle and won awards, which helped me get into college.
Now at Harvard University, I’m an editor of The Crimson. While I never had Mr. Mastin as a teacher, he mentored me through middle school, which made it fun. He defined my experience. I will always be indebted to him."

"In the 7th grade, I got involved with the Middle School newspaper, The Circuit. Paul was the faculty advisor. I remember talking to him with other students about ways in which we could improve the paper. Conversations ranged from using different computer programs for layout to using different techniques in terms of reporting. Paul encouraged the creation of a brand-new publication called The Spectrum. It complemented the Upper School publication and focused entirely on middle school events and activities.
Paul was always about the future and innovation. He was never a naysayer. He showed me that anything’s possible — just go do it. When I became editor-in-chief of The Chronicle at the Upper School, I helped introduce similar innovations there.
At Harvard University, I totally transformed the photography journal. Today I’m advising newspapers on digital media strategy. Without a doubt, it all stems from the creative license Paul gave me when I was very young."
