Piles of waste tires can leach chemicals into the environment, breed mosquitoes when water is trapped in them, and release toxic fumes if they catch fire. There are 155 million tires in stockpiles across the nation according to the Rubber Manufacturers Association.
Harvard-Westlake alumna Catherine Huybrechts Burton ’95 has co-developed a method to more quickly and accurately identify tire piles. The method is now being used in California, and other states may follow. Read More

Jason Reitman '95 is among the Oscar nominees announced this morning for best director. Reitman's film, Juno, was also nominated for best picture and best original screenplay. Ellen Page is a nominee for best actress for her role in the film.
The 80th Academy Awards will be presented Sunday, Feb. 24, 2008 at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.

Max Haymer '03 has been playing soccer -- and the piano -- since he was 7 years old. While at Harvard-Westlake, he played piano in the jazz band. He’s a recent graduate of the University of California, Irvine, with a degree in jazz performance. In addition to studying music, he was a division 1 soccer player for the UC Irvine Anteaters for four years.
Among Max’s favorite musicians are pianist Oscar Peterson of the International Jazz Hall of Fame, and Grammy Award-winning pianist, composer and band leader Chick Corea.
It was while at UC Irvine that he formed the Max Haymer Trio, which is now his full-time job. Between shows, the trio is currently working on their first CD. In his spare time, Max coaches soccer for the Westmark School in Encino.

A memorial service celebrating the life and work of Carl Wilson, who passed away on Monday, January 14, will be held in St. Saviour’s Chapel on the Upper School (Coldwater Canyon) campus on Saturday, February 2, at 2:30 p.m. A reception will follow in Feldman-Horn Gallery.

Damiene Cain, a 6'5" freshman, scored 19 points Monday night in a basketball victory that keeps the Wolverines unbeaten in the Mission League.
Sophomores Austin Kelly and Erik Swoope, and senior Renaldo Woolridge, also contributed a substantial number of points to the final score of 68-64.

Tom Stone '89 is a documentary photographer known for his portraits of people living on the edges of society. From Jan. 30 to Feb. 16, Stone's photography will be on exhibit in the Feldman-Horn Gallery on the Coldwater Canyon campus. An opening reception will be held at the Feldman-Horn Gallery on Sunday, Feb. 3 from 2 - 5 p.m.
Stone is a graduate of Harvard University with a degree in computer science.
