Architecture

The architects of the project – award-winning Jeffrey M. Kalban & Associates – designed the new Middle School campus buildings in a style reminiscent of the architecture of the former Westlake School for Girls. The new campus layout, new buildings and alterations to existing buildings tie the campus together.

In developing the modernization plan, architect Susan Oakley addressed several objectives:

  • Add classrooms to meet curriculum and technology needs, and space requirements;

  • Add a suitable auditorium for performing arts that is also large enough to hold weekly assemblies of faculty, staff and students;

  • Improve the athletic field to regulation size;

  • Eliminate on-street queuing and provide adequate on-site parking for the everyday schedule as well as for special events;

  • Do all of this in a way that allows the school to remain operational during construction and to take advantage of the natural topography and mature landscaping.

Susan and her colleagues succeeded in designing a master plan that achieves those objectives and more.
