Middle School Modernization Project
|
FAQs
Former, current and prospective students and their families, neighbors, donors and others interested in the middle school modernization plan rightfully have many questions about it. Below is our best effort to answer the most frequently asked question about the project. Please click on the question to view the answer.
| When will the modernization plan be complete? |
| The entire project will be completed in spring 2009. Phase One, the construction of the new buildings, is expected to be completed in fall 2008. Phase Two, the creation of the athletic field and the updates to the Marshall Center and Reynolds Hall, is expected to be finished in spring 2009. |
| What’s the plan for transitioning students from the current buildings to the new ones? |
| The plan allowed for students to start the 2008-2009 school year in the new buildings. As the buildings were completed, furniture and fixtures were moved in so the moving process occured once the school received occupancy permits in summer 2008.
|
| What parts of the existing campus were changed or torn down?
|
| The current Administration Building, library and music building were torn down. Reynolds Hall has been renovated and has become the home of the Middle School Visual Arts programs. The Marshall Center, which was created to house both arts and athletics, has become a dedicated athletic center.
|
| How long do you expect the second phase (i.e., construction work on the current campus) to take? |
| Construction work on the current campus will take approximately six months. |
| Is the project on schedule? |
| We are currently on schedule and enjoying the opportunity to watch the progress! If you are interested in getting a closer look at the construction, please email Susan Leher '96 in the Office of Advancement, who is currently arranging “hard-hat tours” of the site. |
| Can you provide some details about the new performing arts center? |
| The new performing arts center features a theater that has the capacity of 850 (694 permanent seats and 156 removable seats). There is also a black-box theater, which adds versatility to the performing arts programs because the space can be set up in myriad ways. The building also features choral and instrumental music practice rooms in close proximity to the stage, enabling performers to have a backstage area during performance. Most importantly, the performing arts center is a dedicated space for theater, dance, choral and instrumental programs.
|
| Do more sports take place on the new and expanded athletic field, thereby reducing the need to practice off-site?
|
| Absolutely. More teams are able to practice on the field simultaneously, greatly reducing the need for teams to find off-campus practice locations.
|
| What is the cost of the modernization plan? Are all of the funds raised? |
| The cost of the Middle School Modernization Project is $125 million. As of September 15, 2009, $113.8 million has been raised. If you would like to discuss a campaign gift in support of this project, please contact Ed Hu, Chief Advancement Officer, at ehu@hw.com or (310) 288-3335.
