Middle School Community Service
Community Service is an integral part of the Harvard-Westlake Middle School experience, and participation is required of all students each school year. The Middle School program is designed to introduce students to the vast and varied needs of the greater community. Through discussion, reflection and, most importantly, hands-on experience, students see that their time and efforts can have an important impact on the lives of others. From this involvement, it is our hope the students gain a sense of accomplishment, independence, and personal responsibility. (To visit the Middle School community service site, click here)
Upper School Community Service
Community Service is required for all students during each school year at the Upper School. In 2008, the student-run Upper School Community Council was formed in order to encourage, support, and facilitate each student's involvement in community service endeavors that both address the needs of the broader community of Los Angeles and build a stronger school community. The Council currently consists of 20 juniors and seniors who work to plan school-sponsored outreach trips and counsel students on their own individual and group projects. Middle School SQUID
Since 1999, the Middle School campus-wide clean-up program called "SQUID" (the name is not an acronym) has been bringing our community together by involving faculty and all seventh, eighth, and ninth grade students. The 7th and 8th graders are required to spend one hour after school per year picking up trash, sweeping and mopping with two to three other students and supervised by a faculty member. The ninth grade students are required to spend three periods per year mopping and sweeping the communal lunch area during lunchtime. This program, which occurs throughout the day, every day of the school year, creates a stronger sense of community among all students, faculty and staff and helps to keep our campus tidy and beautiful.
Students in 8th, 9th, 10th & 11th grades are required to do school service for one period per week for one semester each year. Called Student Service at the Middle School and Student Intern at the Upper School, students are assigned to work in various departments and offices around campus. Examples of placement assignments include the bookstore, library, Upper School office, attendance office, and the performing arts office. Duties vary and may include responsibilities such as selling items at the bookstore, placing books back on shelves in the library, or labeling envelopes for school mailings. All placements are randomly assigned.
