Giving
Back to the Community!
The
goal of the Community Service Program is to proactively foster a
sense of responsibility, commitment, and deeper connections to the
diverse communities of greater Los Angeles. Community Service is
an integral part of the curriculum where students are urged to venture
beyond their own communities and to participate in outreach that
increases their knowledge and understanding of those different from
themselves. A wide range of programs focus on outreach to numerous
groups and causes including: interacting with the elderly and critically
ill; public school mentoring and tutoring; interacting with preschoolers
through Head Start; feeding the indigent and homeless; building
homes in partnership with those needing respectable shelter; rescuing
and protecting the environment; promoting literacy through magazine/periodical
donations; assisting victims of abuse, women transitioning from
welfare to work, runaway teens, and those in foster care; and caring
for abused and homeless animals. Students in grades 7-12 contribute
over 40,000 hours of community service each academic year.
