Pre-Algebra and Algebra Readiness

This three-week workshop is designed for students getting ready to enter a pre-algebra or algebra course. We will work on basic arithmetic skills often forgotten but so essential to future math classes. Learn how to work with fractions, decimals and percents more quickly without tricks or gimmicks by simply increasing your understanding of how numbers work. And, all the work will be done without a calculator. All skills will be taught in the context of topics covered in pre-algebra and algebra courses: area and volume, probability, word problems, ratios and simple equations. Gain confidence in your skills and learn how not to be so dependent upon your calculator. Upon completion of the course, students will be given a packet of materials so that they can continue practicing over the summer. Ms. Satterthwaite is a math teacher at Harvard-Westlake Upper School.

Forget Algebra Worries!

This three-week workshop is an intensive review of the essential concepts of Algebra I. It is intended for students who have completed Algebra I and who now want to review algebra before entering a second year algebra course. Emphasis will be placed on simplifying expressions, solving equations, applications or word problems, numeracy and study skills. If you have struggled with the ideas of algebra in the past, or you are looking for ways to gain confidence and ease the stress you feel when doing math, this would be an excellent refresher course for you to secure your mathematical foundation.

Geometry

This 6-week summer course covers a year of high school geometry. We will concentrate on the study of Euclidean Geometry while maintaining and enhancing algebraic skills. Students will learn the ideas, concepts and theorems of this branch of mathematics as they were developed by the early mathematicians. Students will also extend their reasoning skills by forming geometric arguments, and they will learn how to apply these principles to solve problems in various situations.

The first 3 weeks of the course will concentrate on topics covered in Geometry A which include the Basic Concepts, Congruent Triangles, Parallel Lines, and Polygons. We will also be concentrating on the techniques of writing proofs during this session.

The second 3 weeks of the course will concentrate on topics covered in Geometry B which considers Similar Polygons, the Pythagorean Theorem, Circles, Area, Surface Area and Volume, and Coordinate Geometry.

This course is open to Harvard-Westlake students who did not take Geometry by the 9th grade. This will allow them to continue their math studies at the Algebra II level. This course is also open to any non-Harvard-Westlake student who has completed 8th grade. A grade for this course will be given if needed or requested. 

Get Ready for Pre-Calculus

This course is designed to help students improve their algebra skills in preparation for Precalculus. It will cover all of the topics taught in Algebra II, but it is more than a refresher! It will develop strong problem solving skills. Students will become confident and successful math students.

Students will first review the topics in Algebra II: linear and quadratic equations and functions, polynomial functions, Additional topics include complex numbers, polynomial and rational functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, sequences and series, and an introduction to trigonometry. The graphing calculator will be used to help understand problems, as well as to simplify them.

The Algebra of Calculus with Trigonmetry and Analytic Geometry

This course is designed to help students improve their math skills in preparation for Calculus. Students will have a quick review of the important types of problems that Calculus students must be able to solve. The problem solutions require Algebra, Trigonometry and Geometry techniques, which will be reviewed. Students will become experienced in approaching complex, multi-step problems which are part of the Calculus curriculum. These problems will require students to use math studied in the past, as well as to practice explaining problems with a sketch, or verbal description. Students will also be provided with ample practice with the graphing calculator.
