Summer Saxophone Workshop

Grade Levels: 7 - 10
Dates/Time: June 22 - July 2, 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM
Location: Orchestra Room, Upper School Campus
Instructor: Shawn Costantino
Cost: $695 (includes books and materials)
Harvard-Westlake has always had robust musical offerings in the summer months however, jazz director Shawn Costantino has decided a change is needed. Instead of the typical “Come one Come all Jazz Combo summer sessions”, the New and Improved HW summer music class will be instrument specific. This summer’s class will be for saxophone players ONLY. If you are a saxophonist and you have had AT LEAST 3 years of formalized music training, than you are eligible for the Summer Intensive Saxophone Seminar. This class is designed primarily for Saxophone players from the 7th-9th grades but is open to older students who wish to improve their fundamental skill level on the saxophone.  The course will focus on: reed selection, mouthpieces, finding a horn to suit you, jazz harmony, theory, ear-training, and improvisation. We will also spend a great deal of time rehearsing with a semi-professional to professional level rhythm section to discuss matters of band chemistry, rehearsal techniques and the mastery of standard jazz, pop, and funk  repertoire through daily jam sessions and performances. Guest artists from the Los Angeles music community will be invited to join the class to give lectures and master classes on many of the topics listed above. Please contact Shawn Costantino, director of jazz studies with ANY questions or concerns. scostantino@hw.com
