Track & Field Camp: Participants in this camp will be introduced to all aspects of track and field, covering the technique and training concepts of all events. This will be a very active camp. Athletes will learn by doing, and we emphasize learning and fun without pressure. The end of the camp will include an enjoyable intra-camp multi-event competition where athletes will apply their newly acquired abilities in a meet environment. The camp will take place on the newly-improved track at Ted Slavin Field. Coach Koolsbergen is the head track and field coach for boys and girls at Harvard-Westlake. He has coached 122 C.I.F. finalists in the last sixteen years and led the Wolverines to a C.I.F. championship in 1992. Olympic champion in the 400 meter hurdles, Felix Sanchez, will also be an instructor at this camp.
Speed Camp: Each athlete will receive personal attention to improve his or her running speed in Speed Camp. These camps will give each athlete the tools needed to become faster. Students do not have to be track athletes to participate in or benefit, as students in almost all sports can benefit from being faster and quicker. We will dissect the very process of sprinting and use the knowledge gained to make refinements in each athlete’s sprinting. Each phase of running will be analyzed – start, acceleration and maintained speed. Athletes will go through sample workouts and entire long-term training programs will be introduced. Stretching and injury prevention will also be taught. All athletes will be videotaped and analyzed so they can more easily work on their running. The camp will take place on the Upper School track and field facility. Coach Koolsbergen is the head track and field coach for boys and girls at Harvard-Westlake.
