Length of Film: 10 minutes maximum. We encourage the submission of shorter works so that we can showcase more filmmakers.

Submission Format: Upload your film to FilmFreeway. If your film is selected you will need to provide a high res Quicktime.mov file so that we can represent your film at its best quality.

Submission Deadline: The final deadline is in early January each year, but we encourage you to submit your film as soon as possible.

Entry fee: None

Judging Process: Each film submitted is carefully considered in a several-tiered process. A committee comprised of students, Harvard-Westlake faculty, and guest faculty from other schools selects the final 15-20 films. These films are then evaluated anonymously by a group of industry professionals to determine awards in several categories (directing, cinematography, screenwriting, acting and the like). These awards (known as the Lizzies, in honor of the Festival’s founder, Liz Yale) are presented the night of the Festival.

Notification Process: We will make every effort to notify filmmakers of the status of their films by mid- February prior to the festival. Due to the high volume of submissions, we are not able to give individual feedback. Films that are selected for the festival will receive comments from the industry professional judges.

Contact Info: If you have any questions, feel free to email faculty advisors Reb Limerick or Brannon Rockwell-Charland.

Dates of the Festival: Our festival screening event and awards night takes place in mid March on a Friday night. Selected filmmakers will receive a limited number of tickets to share with their crews and families. Saturday we host our Filmmaker Workshop, a day of personalized feedback from industry professionals and an opportunity for filmmakers to foster connections. The festival is free and open to the public but you must make reservations through the Box Office.

Online: Each year we put links to the films selected for our festival online. By participating in the Westflix Film Festival, you agree to allow us to post your film online.

A Final Note: We receive around 300 films each year. We ask that you send us only your very best work. We look forward to seeing your film(s). Good luck!
