As web pages are being developed, and Internet activity continues to grow, web authors must adhere to existing school policies and in particular to the following.

General Guidelines

Laws that apply to the printed word usually apply in the electronic medium as well. Such laws include restrictions on slander, threats of bodily harm, and pornography. A network server is like a printing press, and it should treated as such. If it can't be printed in a newspaper, it can't be placed on Harvard-Westlake School web sites.

School web pages cannot be used to promote or execute commercial or for-profit endeavors.

Written permission of any identifiable persons shown in photographs must be obtained using the forms provided. Also see below.

Applicable Policies

Web pages on Harvard-Westlake's web sites must comply with the laws and policies indicated below. Web authors must understand how their content is affected by these policies.

  • Harvard-Westlake School Acceptable Use Policy
  • Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998 - establishes limitations for copyright infringement liability for online service providers. The DMCA specifies requirements for notice (provided by the service provider) and takedown (by the service provider of the alleged infringing material).
  • Fair use of copyright works (Copyright Act of 1976) - Fair use exemptions to copyright law apply when course web pages are used exclusively for educational purposes. This may be done by acknowledging sources, restricting access, obtaining permission or license for use, or some combination of all of these.
  • Federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 - insures the confidentiality of students' education records and restricts disclosure to or access by third parties, except as authorized by law.

Enforcement

All web authors are responsible for following school policies and local, state and federal laws. Violation of any law or school policy must be corrected immediately. Failure to correct pages are subject to removal from the web site and/or web author may lose access to his/her web space.

School Web Pages

School web pages represent the School's academic and administrative departments, programs, and offices or activities.

The following applies to school web pages:

  • Each page should include the date of last update (Last Updated: MM/DD/YY)
  • Web authors are responsible for keeping information and/or links accurate and current.
  • To avoid duplication of information, web authors are encouraged to determine if the information they want to publish already exists. If so, link to it rather than recreate it.
  • Web pages should focus on information about your program, not simply entertainment.
