Westflix! Harvard-Westlake’s 21st Annual Student-Run Film Festival for California Teens

Westflix is Harvard-Westlake's annual student-run film festival for California teens since 2004. Each year Westflix student festival directors, board members, club members, and advisors work together to curate, plan, and promote the festival. Westflix Film Festival is a red carpet screening and awards event in March at a movie theater in Hollywood with a celebrity host. The Day After Filmmakers’ Workshops allow student filmmakers and video artists to receive feedback from industry professionals and build community with each other. Whether you’re a filmmaker or a film lover, Westflix is a special opportunity to be a part of a film festival for high school students by high school students.

Westflix is produced by members of the Harvard-Westlake School community and thus holds values of diversity, equity, and inclusion at its core. Each year we work to reach further to include and uplift the voices and stories of a more diverse range of young filmmakers across the state. Westflix is a brave space for creative expression and education that celebrates and recognizes student artists of different identities and backgrounds. In the past, we’ve been proud to showcase films by LGBTQIA+ filmmakers, POC filmmakers, first generation filmmakers, Jewish filmmakers, women filmmakers, first time filmmakers, filmmakers with disabilities, and other students of marginalized communities, who were able to share their own stories via our platform. As arbiters of media, we understand how much representation matters and will continue to expand our scope.

Festival Directors

Our Westflix Board is a decision-making and idea-generating body that supports the Festival Directors and completes substantive tasks central to the festival. The Westflix Board, composed of HW Seniors passionate about Film/Video, is an extension of the Westflix leadership team.

Additionally, the Westflix Club is composed of dedicated HW 10th-12th graders who are responsible for judging submitted films and helping with promotion for the festival.

Westflix also partners with the Office of Advancement to produce the screening event in March.

There are many others who make Westflix possible and we recognize them in our annual program. Thank you to all who submit and judge films, help the organization run smoothly throughout the year, make the event so special each spring, and attend and support the annual festival.
